If you spoke Old English and were boiling something, you'd use the verb sēoþan – from which English today gets two very distinct words:
- From its infinitive/present tense, we get 'seethe', now used for strong emotions.
- From its past participle ġesoden ('boiled, cooked'), we also get 'sodden'.
