🚨 Last month was the *2nd* hottest May on record globally. This was estimated at 1.42°C warmer than a pre-industrial (1850-1900) average. Ocean temperatures were already record high over the tropical Pacific region.
Summary by @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social at climate.copernicus.eu/surface-air-...
My monthly #Arctic temperature graphics are now updated for May 2026. Fairly unremarkable month compared to some recent years. See: zacklabe.com/arctic-tempe.... #DataViz #SciComm #OpenScience #OpenData
Our oceans are extremely warm compared to the historical record. One of those areas of record high temperatures last month was across the North Pacific.
Graph shows the average for a band across the midlatitudes for every May from 1854-2026 using
NOAA ERSSTv5 data (psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded...). 🌊
Last month was the 8th lowest #Antarctic sea ice extent on record for the month of May.
This was 820,000 km² below the 1981-2010 May average. Data from the @nsidc.bsky.social at nsidc.org/data/seaice_...
More bad news as dedicated climate reporting seemingly continues to dwindle: www.semafor.com/article/06/0....
Just noting that nothing about the science has changed. If anything, the evidence is becoming even clearer, and the impacts of climate change are increasingly apparent.
Monday ice update - global sea ice extent is currently among the 5 lowest values on record for this date and is not far from the record low. The largest anomalies are coming from the Arctic.

Trends in June sea ice concentration are still mostly confined to coastal areas of the #Arctic Ocean. The largest declines are found in the Barents Sea this time of year.
Sea ice concentration = fraction of ice-cover (observed by satellite). Info: doi.org/10.1175/BAMS...
Sea surface temperatures are already surging to record high levels for this time of year in key El Niño monitoring areas.

Check out how temperatures have changed around our planet over the last four decades in June! There's widespread warming but also different regional patterns/hotspots.
