Last month was the 8th lowest #Antarctic sea ice extent on record for the month of May. This was 820,000 km² below the 1981-2010 May average. Data from the @nsidc.bsky.social at nsidc.org/data/seaice_...
Sea surface temperatures are already surging to record high levels for this time of year in key El Niño monitoring areas. ➡️ Sign up for our next monthly state of the climate webinar to learn more: climatecentral-org.zoom.us/webinar/regi.... We'll also be talking about the hurricane season outlook.
Here are the latest monthly-averaged observations of global methane (CH₄; a potent greenhouse gas)... February 2026 - 1940.46 ppb February 2025 - 1933.76 ppb + Data: gml.noaa.gov/ccgg/trends_... + More info on trends: doi.org/10.1126/scie...
Trends in June sea ice concentration are still mostly confined to coastal areas of the #Arctic Ocean. The largest declines are found in the Barents Sea this time of year. Sea ice concentration = fraction of ice-cover (observed by satellite). Info: doi.org/10.1175/BAMS...
Temperature anomalies (departure from average) around our planet for the last month (left), 3 months (center), and 12 months (right)... Data from doi.org/10.24381/cds...
🚨 Last month was the *2nd* hottest May on record globally. This was estimated at 1.42°C warmer than a pre-industrial (1850-1900) average. Ocean temperatures were already record high over the tropical Pacific region. Summary by @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social at climate.copernicus.eu/surface-air-...
Our oceans are extremely warm compared to the historical record. One of those areas of record high temperatures last month was across the North Pacific. Graph shows the average for a band across the midlatitudes for every May from 1854-2026 using NOAA ERSSTv5 data (psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded...). 🌊
More bad news as dedicated climate reporting seemingly continues to dwindle: www.semafor.com/article/06/0.... Just noting that nothing about the science has changed. If anything, the evidence is becoming even clearer, and the impacts of climate change are increasingly apparent.
My monthly #Arctic temperature graphics are now updated for May 2026. Fairly unremarkable month compared to some recent years. See: zacklabe.com/arctic-tempe.... #DataViz #SciComm #OpenScience #OpenData
Monday ice update - global sea ice extent is currently among the 5 lowest values on record for this date and is not far from the record low. The largest anomalies are coming from the Arctic. More at zacklabe.com/global-sea-i...
