You always see people boarding even as the engines are fired up and the ship is preparing for departure; usually under the sound of coast guard officers yelling (core summer memories)
Summer is here which means that I see posts complaining about ferries in Greece and how are „chaotic“ and „uncivilised“ they are. I see how it could come as a shock to a first-time passenger and agree that ports are in a rough shape, one thing stands true: this is what peak efficiency looks like.
This is why disembarkation works the way it does: before docking, pax will be gathered in the car deck and exit via the wide car ramp. Disembarkation will have taken less than a minute for foot pax and embarkation will start immediately. When does it end? When the ramp is lifted.
Island ports are usually tiny, departures and arrivals come in banks and the priority system for vessels is mostly loose, so following the schedule is crucial. When you have to unload and load 100s of pax and cars within 15‘, you have to do it fast. It is a well-coordinated choreography.

A verdict from my short trip to Lanzarote is that all this infra for tourists arriving on their 17,99€ flights from N Europe (and everything that comes with them) is really being behilft at the expense of the actual towns and villages of the island
