Dragon God is one of the most awesome spectacles in any Fromsoft game. Just the coolest shit you'll ever see.
But it's not fun to play. Hurtboxes are wonky. Tells are hard to read, if you can even see them at all. Damage is too high.

The first time I played Demon's Souls, I stubbornly fought Flamelurker melee and absolutely hated it.
Now I just put Water Veil on and peck him to death with magic to get it over with!
Cool design, for just a big fire guy, but the hurtboxes on his attacks are obnoxious.

While I'm cool on the zone, I love the Adjudicator. Absolutely wild design, I just wish it was executed better. Mechanically there isn't much there, and the camera doesn't handle the cramped space well. Lives larger in the imagination.

Not my favorite set of photos, this zone was tough to (CRT) photograph on account of being very monochrome throughout, producing various camera artifacts.
And I'm more a fan of the boss than the zone itself, honestly.

Demon's Souls on CRT soldiers on.
Upon closer inspection, and reflection, Fool's Idol stands out as an extremely well designed boss fight. It's a perfect mixture of gimmick boss and moderate combat challenge, AND it's an appropriate lore capstone to the level.

The placement of this particular black phantom is so evil.
At the end of a *very* long level, right before the boss door, she appears out of thin air armed with a one-shot crossbow and a plague knife, ready to inflict a stressful run-back upon first-time players.

Something I love about the level design of Demon's Souls in comparison to subsequent games is how LONG the levels are. You often cover a lot of ground, vertically and horizontally, and pass through multiple distinct sub-areas.

Latria is handily my favorite zone in any Fromsoft game. It may as well have fallen straight out of the Plato zone. Undiminished. Perfect.
It's a torture prison that harvests human suffering to feed a Lovecraftian demon. Incredible.

I love the music here, it's using every trick in the book to be unsettling. Lot of crunchy dissonance and chromatic slides. Pizzicato plucks. Sickly brass. Stabs. Urgent, pounding drums.

2-1 isn't the most exciting of the early zones in Demon's Souls but I'm impressed by its excellent sense of place and history. A lot of work was put into making this a believable space while still being a fantastical abstraction. There's implicit class commentary, also.

1-2 is another all-timer. It's so stressful, and I love that if you go underground to escape the dragon fire you get owned by dogs in the dark. These sorts of horror elements are essential to Demon's Souls' success, I think.
