But we also know that Dimensions is still far from indexing all non-English-language papers. - How many species are there on Earth? - How many papers are published in language X? Which of these questions is more difficult to answer??
A new article on the ongoing impacts of #languagebarriers in science and potential solutions, with a particular focus on Africa. Also nice to see my long-secret toilet episode finally out in the open😅 www.nature.com/articles/d44...

Analysis of 56,680 applications to the Canadian federal grant scheme revealed that writing a grant proposal in French rather than in English is associated with lower chances of securing funding (35.5% vs 37.6%). Important work! doi.org/10.1177/0038... #languagebarriers
Climate mitigation and biodiversity loss are intertwined but often treated as separate challenges. In this work led by @nperezmendez.bsky.social we argue that widely promoted water‑saving practices can lower GHG emissions yet harm freshwater biodiversity. We propose alternative management options.
In this work led by Josh Wilson, we labelled 4824 drone-based images containing 49990 birds from 101 species and trained a bird detection and ID model. The model achieved precision = 0.91 for detection & 0.65 for species/age/sex classification. zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Analysis of 87,577,942 articles in Dimensions showed an increase in % of non-English-language publications from 6.14% in 1990 to 14.48% in 2023, likely indicating an increase in non-English-language publications (esp Indonesian) and their growing visibility. doi.org/10.1002/asi.... #languagebarriers
A great set of practical suggestions on how to overcome language barriers in science, from our project member/collaborator @henryarenas.bsky.social and @vramirezc.bsky.social, also highlighting some of our work. #languagebarriers www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Median amount of time spent under review is 7.4–14.6% longer for female-authored articles than for male-authored articles and the differences remain significant after controlling for several factors - analysis of >36.5 million articles in >36,000 journals doi.org/10.1371/jour...
