I won’t speak for them but, having met Schoenbrun a handful of times (we have mutual friends) I believe this to be largely correct

“We cannot relate to people unlike us” is a view of art that is both extremely reactionary and extremely uninteresting!
Schoenbrun also intentionally (I have to assume, given the level of craft) made the central metaphor of the film something that can be read different ways!
