New preprint!
My major project from my postdoc is finally out. Check out @rodbraga.bsky.social's summary here about my work on mental imagery and self-generated mental states, and the brain systems that support these processes!

New paper in Imaging Neuroscience by Joseph J. Salvo, Rodrigo M. Braga, et al:
Intrinsic functional connectivity delineates transmodal language functions
doi.org/10.1162/IMAG...
This fall, I'll be starting as an assistant professor at Brigham Young University in the Psychology Department. My lab will study memory and mental imagery and the brain networks that support them. I'm excited to engage with BYU students and collaborate with new colleagues!
Check out Chris Cyr's awesome work on individualized brain networks and intracranial stimulation!
Excited to share my most recent work with Joey Salvo and @rodbraga.bsky.social on the transmodal language network, defined using functional connectivity and multiple different tasks. Take a look!
Our paper is out! This has been years in the making.
We found that mental imagery and perception do share a neural substrate, but we see it in in higher-order transmodal networks rather than earlier sensory systems. Check it out!

I'm grateful to everyone who contributed to this project (special thanks to co-authors Joey Salvo, @themindwanders.bsky.social and @rodbraga.bsky.social )
Anderson et al. map brain activity during cued imagination with individual-level precision fMRI and show that imagined scenes and inner speech recruit distinct networks whose engagement tracks self-reported vividness. Overlap with perception was mainly in association networks, rather than nearby sensory networks, suggesting that transmodal brain systems support mental imagery.
Nice write up about our paper on mental imagery in Science News
