Today marks 30 years since we identified the apicoplast, a relict plastid in human and animal parasites (PMID 8632819). Apicoplasts are the target of the widely used antimalarial prophylactic doxycycline, which has saved many thousands of malaria infections.

After the record-smashing warm years of 2023 and 2024 for ocean temperatures across the tropical Atlantic, we've perhaps become numb to just how warm it still is in 2026. As of May, it's the 3rd-warmest on record, going back to 1850 (2024 was 1st, 2023 was 2nd, 2025 was 4th).

For long 16S nanopore amplicons (R10.4, sup-basecalled), savont requires 5-16x less depth for capturing ASVs. This improvement is more stark for longer amplicons (e.g. rRNA operon). For HiFi, savont + existing ASV methods are comparable, although savont misses a few intragenomic 16S copies. 4/6
