conversely i think a lot of people were just dead wrong about the deterrent value of a latent or breakout-ready nuclear capability - if anything the possibility of Iranian breakout reduced Iranian security. it was a powerful casus belli for US+Isr (and not only for public consumption)
That last goal off Kamada in the Netherlands-Japan game is the craziest double headshot in Dallas since 1963
if i were a Cool Professor I'd write this point on the board in red sharpie and tell you it was going to be on the exam later
because this is a big "I told you so" against some Japan & SK nuke proponents as well as a particular subset of Euronuke optimists
We were so fixated back then on this problem of "regional nuclear deterrence", with the Russia and China problems still fuzzy in the distance for a lot of people. And some of that discourse turned out very prophetic to be sure. Turns out asymmetry of stake really was super important for instance.
Iran was strategically on the back foot. Loss of Syrian proxies, inability to restore deterrence against Israel or the US, GCC states slowly accepting Israel in the region, sanctions generally working...and then we put them in a position to gamble for resurrection and boy howdy did they.
