However, many of the plugs were not looking their best, especially in the drier areas - while they haven't lost any significant volume, they have taken a hit, and we will continue to monitor them over the coming months. There is plenty more research on this site yet to come.

We're working in partnership with Yorkshire Water to increase biodiversity. Yorkshire Water is funding a scientific study into how to reduce the dominance of Molinia (or Purple Moor Grass), and thus increase biodiversity.

Of the 198 plugs which were in the burnt area, 195 were still present. Although some plugs were smaller than when they were measured at the end of March, the majority had grown in that time - on average, the plugs were 11% bigger than at the end of March.

After the wildfire near the Snake Pass summit at the beginning of May, our science team returned to the site to check on the sphagnum plugs we planted in the area over the winter. While our plastic monitoring equipment had melted in the heat of the fire, 98% of the sphagnum plugs didn't burn away.
