It even comes after Government minister Mary Creagh wrote to Butterfly Conservation two years ago saying that the Government would 'change existing policies to ban the use of neonicotinoid pesticides that threaten vital pollinators like bees and butterflies'.
Voting for Britain's Favourite Butterfly may have closed, but the vote for banknotes has just begun! 💷🦋
We're thrilled that the iconic Marsh Fritillary butterfly has made the Bank of England's shortlist for the next series of banknotes.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has given permission to British Sugar plc and NFU Sugar for sugar beet farmers to use neonicotinoid pesticides on crops this summer, despite the fact that their use has been officially banned since 2018.
Butterflies bring joy and colour to our parks, gardens and countryside, and are often some of our earliest memories of nature as children. They are not only important pollinators, they are also indicators of a healthy environment and ecosystem. 💚
The Marsh Fritillary in particular is a beautiful but threatened species that has benefitted from dedicated conservation efforts across the UK.
Ban butterfly-killing pesticides for good ❌
Despite repeated promises to ban them, the UK Government has quietly granted yet another 'emergency' license to spray butterfly-killing pesticides across our fields this summer.
We think these beloved insects deserve a space on our banknotes. How about you?

Butterflies cannot wait any longer. We're calling on ministers to do what they promised - set a deadline for an absolute ban on neonicotinoid pesticides. No 'emergency' authorisations. No exemptions.
