The Lammermuirs are one of Scotland’s most treasured rural landscapes. This morning, @benjaminmyers76.bsky.social wrote to us with news of plans to build an industrial data centre on them. Help 66 locals defeat a $2 billion project by signing the petition: www.caughtbytheriver.net/2026/06/save...
Germany / July 14 2026 / paperback @dumontbuchverlag.bsky.social
A sunny Sunday and I'm doing the final edits on my forthcoming novel, which I began writing in January 2022. I post this only as a riposte to the people who keep saying to me "God, you churn them out." If 40+ hour weeks for 4 years is 'churning'...sure!
RIP David Hockney, the artist whose work I've been to see more than any other. 'Large Interior, Los Angeles, 1988' has watched over me for 15 years.
Yesterday @adellestripe.bsky.social and I spontaneously decided to get rid of a chunk of our book collection. We've given it to a pal in Halifax town centre to help her create a communal library in housing for people in drug/alcohol treatment and recovery.
Writing tip: a novel is comprised of one big idea and 36,293 smaller ideas.
My day is ruined.
RIP Nigel Cabourn, smiley-faced honourary Geordie and designer of my favourite clothes.
A poignant privilege to contribute a few words about David Hockney: www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

"Britain is broken" is a dogwhistle btw. It leave a vacuum for the ppl to decide which parts of Britian are broken. If you ask me, I'd say its the running of the NHS, education which is now wildly inconsistent, housing supply, train services. If you ask a bigot, they'd say 'too many foreigners'
