House Speaker Destin Hall’s Medicaid Funding Bill will make every child in our community less safe.
The Bill would require local social workers to report Medicaid applicants to the Department of Homeland Security, even though similar measures in other states have wrongfully targeted 12,000 people in just the last year.
This type of Bill is not about eligibility. Other states have shown us its real impacts on high-risk deliveries, neonatal ICU stays, and an erosion of trust between communities and their state. North Carolina deserves a Medicaid funding proposal that provides care to all North Carolinians, not fear.
Similar “surveillance audits” have incorrectly flagged 14% of applicants, despite being U.S. citizens and legal residents. This means that 1 in every 7 people that North Carolina refers to ICE will probably be a mistake affecting citizens or lawful residents whose cases are simply pending.
Final reading vote is scheduled for Tuesday. But to stop measures like this from happening, we’ve got to change who pays attention when the NC GOP threatens our public health. You can join us to talk to people in your neighborhood who sat out the last election right now 🔗 bit.ly/esbejoinus
