George Orwell listed Paul Robeson as a "crypto-communist" and "fellow traveler" in a notebook he provided to the British Foreign Office's Information Research Department (IRD) in 1949. In his notes, Orwell described the African-American singer and activist as a "US Negro" who was "very anti-white".
