The pope is visiting the archipelago off the western coast of Africa as the centrepiece of a week-long tour of Spain on which he will meet with some 1,000 migrants on Friday (June 12).
In what he called an "appeal to the conscience" of politicians in Europe and the international community, the first US pope said that "human dignity has no passport and does not lose its value when crossing a border."
"We're gonna keep on working together. But where interests diverge, the United States is gonna pursue the best interests of our nation, and that's how it's gonna be," Vance told Robert Costa in an interview airing on Sunday (June 14).
US Vice President JD Vance said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has "certainly gotten some things wrong," but has ultimately "been a good partner" to the US.
His comments mark a further public admission that relations between the two allies have come under pressure of late. Recently, US President Donald Trump reportedly clashed with the Israeli leader over military action in Lebanon that brought renewed strikes and threatened peace talks with Tehran.
While Vance would not provide examples, he told CBS News, the BBC's US partner, that Netanyahu "aggressively asserts the interests of his country" but that they were not always aligned with those of the US.
