Now that I finished reading this, I want to say it’s really well done (misgivings aside) and wholly original.
The premise: whenever someone crosses a border with the intent to immigrate, a double is created who leads the life they would have led if they stayed.

Sublimation breaks open the immigrant novel with an amazingly original conceit and should probably appear in many syllabi soon, but I’m also having a hard time saying you should read it right away. I’m halfway through and feeling really mixed.
