In the unframed control group, 46.6% of respondents supported cost-sharing, with an average deemed contribution of 45.5%. Support was substantial even in the absence of any message intervention.
Economic framing had a modest but statistically significant effect: one frame increased support by 27% (p = 0.01) relative to the control. Framing did not, however, influence the size of contribution respondents considered appropriate.
The strongest predictor of support was respondents' own vaccination status. Fully vaccinated individuals were 96 times more likely to support cost-sharing than their unvaccinated counterparts — far exceeding any framing effect.
🚨New article (joint work with James K. Timmis) on the question: should unvaccinated individuals contribute to their COVID-19 hospitalization costs? We examined public attitudes and the role of framing in a randomized survey experiment.

n=6,725 Germans surveyed in the July 2022 Politikpanel Deutschland uni-freiburg.de/politik/ppd/ Respondents were randomized to a control group or one of four experimental conditions, each highlighting individual or collective, and economic or health, consequences of severe COVID-19 or Long COVID.
Even modest framing effects matter in public health contexts, where small shifts in compliance can influence transmission or vaccine uptake. Targeted communication strategies aligned with political orientation and personality traits offer a relatively low-cost policy lever. #SciComm #HealthPolicy
Long COVID frames produced no significant overall effect, but revealed divergent partisan responses. The same message decreased support among CDU/CSU supporters while increasing it among SPD supporters — underscoring the importance of audience-specific communication. #Framing
