This is an invasive species meaning it has no ecological control so it’s populations will spread very quickly. This is why an early warning was essential to ensure it could be kept under control. Every moment that it’s not being handled means that it will take that much longer to handle it.
By 1966 the species had been purged from the US. At that point monitoring was put into place to create an early warning system to allow for a quick response should the insect return. This is because it is devastating to live stock populations.
Farmers have been running since the 60’s now without having to account for potential loss of livestock due to this pest so a sudden reintroduction is to that industry. Since republicans and DOGE have cut funding to the monitoring a surge is now in full effect with zero warning.
