and, last but not least, MAYA PHILIPP will study the diet of humpback whales 🐋 using stable isotopes, advancing our understanding of marine mammal foraging behavior & contributing to the emerging use of stable isotope-based diet analysis in marine systems.
JENNIFER WHITE will use Raman Spectroscopy to identify microplastics in Florida’s stormwater systems & trace how pollutants move into bat populations, helping to establish bats as bioindicators & producing empirical data linking stormwater infrastructure to wildlife exposure to contaminants.
IZABELLE JAQUET will develop & refine a region-specific methodology for determining bat sex from guano as part of the Illinois Natural History Survey. Her work will unlock answers to key questions about cave community dynamics, artificial roost usage, & the identification of maternal roosts.
DESIREÉ OUTTEN-BERRÍOS will replace 2 ultrasonic recorders used in detecting bat/lemur/small mammal calls in forests in Madagascar & North Carolina, helping them understand how wildlife uses reforested & managed habitats & contributing to their dissertation & future in biodiversity conservation.
2025 WINNERS OF THE BLACK & INDIGENOUS SCHOLAR AWARD 🥳
ALANNAH GRANT will purchase a telemetry set & conduct research/outreach about urban Eastern gray squirrel ecophysiology & adaptations. The set will be lent to other systemically minoritized communities to assist in diversifying urban ecology.
Since 2022, #BlackMammalogistsWeek has partnered with ASM to support Black & Indigenous folks interested in mammals, made possible solely from the generosity of private donor-created funds. No membership dues or conference registration fees are used. Our sincere gratitude to the gifts of many.
