Jacqueline has a forthcoming paper at AJPS looking at how issues and endorsements affect voter choice so she’s already off to a great start in what is sure to be an amazing career. We can’t wait until she gets to Tallahassee in a year!
I’m especially gloating about this since when I posted our job announcements here last fall, a whole bunch of people (mostly nonacademics) joked that no one would want to come to Florida. I understand why people might not want to move here, but FSU remains a great school with a great polisci dept.
These are all highly successful scholars near the tops of their fields. We’ve also hired a bunch of promising assistant professors who have already started converting that promise into excellent output. The future looks very bright here at FSU.
We should be hiring this upcoming year as well, possibly multiple positions pending the budget being resolved. I’ll announce them here when they’re finalized.
Overall, we had a spectacular year of hiring. We’ve been especially successful at the hiring at the senior level recently with Lonna Atkenson, Ryan Owens, Yusaku Horiuchi, and now Jim Gibson all joining us since the pandemic plus Andy Ballard who we hired as a senior assistant and have since tenured
His job market paper, “How Does Agenda Order Matter for Courts? Evidence from Qualified Immunity Cases,” just won APSA’s law and courts section’s best paper award. He is a rising star in judicial politics and political science more broadly and we’re excited he’ll be starting his career with us.
Now that we’re well into summer, I think it’s time to announce here FSU’s polisci dept’s hiring last year. (I meant to do at the end of the year but forgot.) First up, James Gibson, previously of WashU, will be joining us in the fall as the Regent’s Research Professor. This is a huge coup for us.
Jim is one of the top political scientists around (and has been ranked as the most prolific political scientist in the world multiple times) and is a world leader in both judicial politics and political behavior. We are excited that he will be joining us and look forward to what he adds to our dept.
Finally, Jacqueline Calao, a PhD student from Berkeley, will be joining us in Fall 2027 following a post doc at Princeton’s CSDP. Jacqueline is a scholar of representation and political behavior as well as gender and politics, focusing particularly on primary elections. www.jacquelinecolao.com
Next up, Sam England will be joining us in the fall. He is a judicial politics scholar who was a PhD student at Emory. He studies how judicial institutions influence judicial decision making. sam-england.com
