The Court had never before said what Rick quotes below. In Purcell itself, the Court cited as its justification "voter confusion and consequent incentive to remain away from the polls." This is an interest of *voters,* not "States," and especially not when the state itself is causing the confusion.
Just so things are clear going forward, the “Purcell principle” means that any branch of state government may impose last minute, illegal election changes that discriminate against Black voters, but no branch of government may redress them, for fear of chaos.
Finally, the opinion turns the equities on its head in many ways. The Court now says that a federal court cannot remedy a voting violation at the last minute under the so-called Purcell Principle, but states should go to town with new, unconstitutional plans:
@nytimes.com I’m glad you’re a fan but just link the original story next time
To prove racial gerrymandering, a plaintiff has to draw race-blind districts that are just as favorable to Republicans. But that's impossible to do because Republicans uniformly select racists as their candidates and Black voters won't vote for racists. So racial gerrymandering is always allowed.
Meanwhile in Utah’s fight over redistricting, Republicans have expanded the state supreme court and forced a justice to resign over a bullshit “investigation.” Quinn’s proposal is almost modest by comparison. bsky.app/profile/year...
I support this effort. We all should ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼
this is the closest I've ever come to actually suggesting a "one neat trick" suggestion for anything, but I'm so serious here. the Virginia Constitution gives the legislature the power to set retirement ages for judges "REGARDLESS OF THE TERM TO WHICH ELECTED OR APPOINTED." make it 54 right now.
