you know what, I'm tired of being self-effacing, I've been doing that early jazz show for 19 years and yeah, I DO consider myself an expert. Fuck false modesty.
G made vegetarian tonight! Ottolenghi roasted beets with yogurt sauce, lentils and couscous. Turned out great!
Just watched the 2007 Persuasion. Watched because Anthony Head played Sir Walter, he was great but otherwise I wasn’t really into it. I think I need to try again when I haven’t just seen the superlative Amanda Root version, maybe then I could be more generous to this one.
Yay! We’re exceptional! (gift link)
There was one moment I really liked in the Sally Hawkins version: when Wentworth takes her back to Uppercross and asks whether she thinks it’s a good idea for him to go in first, and she smiles because he still values her judgement. That’s all I can think of
This is what I hate about those "gotcha" moments when someone refuses to believe a woman knows what she's talking about. You have to be an expert at @gailsimone.bsky.social's level. If you just know a lot, people (men) (SOME men, don't @ me) assume you're an idiot playacting at having expertise.
I host an FM radio show about early jazz and I'm not an expert in it at the level of @gailsimone.bsky.social with comics but I do know a lot about it and this happens to me A LOT. Old men who like jazz cannot fathom that I know more about any part of it than they do.
Well, Anthony Head is very good at being supercilious. Love him wearily saying “Oh. It’s Mary.” by way of greeting his daughter he hasn’t seen in ages
