I'm trying to imagine what anxiety dreams were like in older times. Probably a lot of "the kid is sick" and "the crop won't be ready by winter" and "I've dishonored my father and everyone's mad at me but I don't remember what I did"
My dreams make jumps between different big cities and technologies and the thousands of people I've met and they're clearly nonsense. Probably harder to ignore if your dream is "my crop was dying, then my pitchfork turned into my wife, that's gotta mean something, Sven" /end

An aside but it occurred to me as I thought about this that it was probably a lot easier to take a dream as a meaningful portent when life was simpler and more geographically restrained and brains had relatively less to work off. 1/
