The promise of “simpler rules” is politically attractive. The consequences may be far less so.
Reopening the #CommonFisheriesPolicy could unravel years of progress towards sustainable fisheries, creating new risks.

⚖️ Marine protection cannot be a box-ticking exercise 🪸
French authorities have been given a legal deadline to strengthen protection measures for the Bancs des Flandres Natura 2000 site.
Conservation measures should be judged by their ecological results, not by the existence of procedures alone.
A new study analyzed 1 676 marine gene patents to map who is patenting what in the ocean.
The researchers found that:
🧬 private companies focus on industrial and agricultural applications
🧬 universities and research institutes develop foundational tools for downstream innovation
