New in @natgenet.nature.com: a moving obituary for Peer. Francesca Ciccarelli, Jan Korbel & Christian von Mering reflect on his scientific vision, from protein domains and genome evolution to metagenomics, and on his generosity as a mentor and friend to so many. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

It has been two weeks since the unexpected death of Peer Bork, and all of us in his research group are deeply missing him. His scientific vision brought us together as a team, and we are immensely grateful for the time we spent together. 🧵

We then identified the microbial taxa that are relevant for bile acid metabolism by mapping the relevant genes and transcripts onto the metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) derived from the study cohort and compared their abundance and prevalence in ALD and healthy subjects.
ALD causes half of all liver-related deaths worldwide. We asked: what happens to the communication between liver and gut as the disease progresses? We found that hepatic bile acid synthesis and the transport back to the liver are disrupted, leading to the accumulation of bile acids at toxic levels.
As always, "science stands on the shoulders of giants". I am grateful for all the work that others have done before me, enabling me to conduct this research using the valuable datasets available to me.
I want to share this news here because I am really happy about it. 🥳 This is definitely a dream come true! 👩🏼‍💻🧬🦠 .. and a lot of work ahead. dhttps://shorturl.at/bOwae
Nine members of the Hansen group at the @cbmr.science Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research will be participating in the Study Group on Genetics of Diabetes (SGDD) conference this week! If you are attending as well, we would love to meet you at our talks and posters! 🧬

Our work exploring host-microbial co-metabolism of bile acids in patients with alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) has been published in the JHEP Reports: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... 🪐 A big thank you to everyone involved, to the GALAXY and MicrobLiver consortia who made this possible! 🙌
