New preprint led by awesome undergrad Abby Bonno! By probing temporal memory for individual items in a sequence, we uncover a 'representational space' of memories that reflects the structure of encoded experiences and provides insight into how different kinds of structure shape memory. osf.io/t5kyx
In a new paper, I delve into these two findings and muse on when prediction might help vs. hurt memory (and discuss why this matters for models of memory and the hippocampus). This is my first solo-author paper, and I had a lot of fun putting these ideas on paper! direct.mit.edu/opmi/article...

Using a new reinforcement-free task we show mice (like humans) extract abstract structure from sound (unsupervised) & dCA1 is causally required by building factorised, orthogonal subspaces of abstract rules.

The first chapter of my dissertation is officially published! ππΊπ€ We found that folks with depression show similar impairments in cognitive functioning after total sleep deprivation as non-depressed folks (and bounce back similarly after recovery sleep):

π―New preprint!
The resource-rational dynamics of evidence accumulation
www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Evidence accumulation isnβt stationary.
It is dynamically controlled to trade off information gain against cognitive effort.

Really thrilled that this paper led by @neurozz.bsky.social is now published in its final version in @elife.bsky.social!!
This is a memory-focused (as opposed to RL-focused) account of the detailed characteristics of forward and backward awake and sleep replay!
