Fair Vote Canada is a national citizens' movement for proportional representation. Sign the Declaration and get involved at http://fairvote.ca/declaration
Fair Vote Canada 🗳️🍁
First-past-the-post fuels regional tensions by overrepresenting the West's Conservatives and the East's Liberals. Proportional representation defuses this friction, ensuring Alberta Liberals, Toronto Conservatives, or voters anywhere else get the representation they vote for.

First-past-the-post lets politicians win majorities without a majority of votes, then rewrite laws to favour wealthy interests. Proportional representation would ensure election funding changes require broad consensus, not just the whims of a single party.
First-past-the-post drives polarized two-party politics where most ridings are written off as safe while the focus goes into appealing to a few swing seats. Proportional representation breaks this cycle, politicians appeal to voters everywhere because no region can be ignored.
Leadership dominates nominations because members risk alienation if they dissent. Proportional representation flips the script. By making it easy to form or join new parties, it gives members real leverage and checks leadership's power.
The airport fight is a double failure of our electoral system. Ford forces changes onto ridings that never vote PC, while the feds use a survey to shield 23 Liberal MPs who swept Toronto despite huge opposition support. Proportional representation would make every voice count.
Under first-past-the-post, people join the dominant party just for any say in the legislature, becoming beholden to leaders who control their fate. Proportional representation breaks this cycle, letting people freely join any party and still have their voices heard.
This is exactly how a voting system with 100% of the power and 40% of the vote creates a culture of backroom deals. Proportional representation means governments have to answer to a broad majority, not just the special interests funding their next campaign. www.thetrillium.ca/insider-news...
P.E.I. has seen firsthand how broken first-past-the-post is. In 2023, the electoral system delivered another massively disproportional result that didn't reflect the public will. If you live on the Island or know someone who does, send this to your friends so they can attend this Saturday!
Highly recommend this insightful analysis on the root cause of political cynicism in Canada. It articulates why western alienation and separatist sentiments thrive under first-past-the-post, and why proportional representation is the only structural solution. www.onthetrail.info/latest/the-o...
If the BC Liberals returned, first-past-the-post puts the BC NDP or BC Conservatives close to a majority with 34% support, while the Liberals win just one seat with 15%. Proportional representation ensures more choices get real power without giving a minority total control.
