Draft one of Lonely Ship may as well have been a different story! It was first person, plotted as I wrote using a TTRPG system, and the main character's name was my name! Some characters have entirely different arcs, and some lose their memories and start over!

So tired today, have not been sleeping well. I can barely keep who I am straight! My poor wife keeps asking me to do stuff, and minutes later I retroactively realise I have said I would do it but not listened to the actual task!

I still have the handwritten Draft 1, plus the typed-up Draft 1.5. But they're hard reads! Much better the entirely re-written future draft, with its fleshed out characters, actually interesting protagonist and eye on the wider story!
My outlining starts very small, a central conceit or a single scene I want to realise. Then I build around that until there's a full narrative framework. First draft is filling that frame with something solid, though I do add details as they become obvious!
