The Rokudō Jizō at Hakone was not as famous as the Kamakura Daibutsu across Sagami Bay, but was still a popular Victorian era tourist spot. The photo here is from Isabella Stewart Gardner's Japan album from her visit in 1883. [https://tinyurl.com/mr3spj4f] The postcard below is form the 1930s.

Despite the English caption, this is not a statue of the 9th century Buddhist monk Kōbō Daishi, otherwise known as Kūkai. As the Japanese caption reads, this is a stone relief carving of the bodhisattva Jizō at Hakone, attributed to Kūkai’s skilled craftsmanship. 🗃️ 📜
