Just got an email with the subject line "Maestro Andrea Bocelli, David Guetta, Megan Thee Stallion and EJAE unite on DNA, the Official FIFA World Cup 2026 Anthem" and I swear to god, that's like something out of Bret Easton Ellis's GLAMORAMA.
At this point, 100+ years in, the best thing for jazz education would be a course called "It's Been Done." Students could present their compositions or their ideas, and the professor could pull out some album and say, "Yeah, So-and-so did that in 1963. Here, check it out."
I think this is because people misunderstand Rollins as the questing post-bebop improviser, wringing a million variations out of a melody, while overlooking his calypso and R&B sides and failing to recognize that he was always a Riff-Based Man. Jazz's current riff champ? James Brandon Lewis.
