And if you're feeling creative, the SPN Summergen Challenge is right around the corner! This long-running competition is chance for SPN fans who don't want to write or create art about ships to shine! archiveofourown.org/collections/...
He has always supported the folks who wrote fanfic of any flavor, so that's nothing new, either. And he has done a lot of good to support real, live queers. Saying that he never played a character as gay and was never told by the writers or showrunners to do so is not homophobic, it's honest.
If we tell TV execs it is okay to write straight characters and then later say "actually they were queer" with no commitment and no reciprocation, we tell them they don't ever have to write good queer characters & plotlines, we'll just eat the dry white bread they give us and call it delicious.
All the SPN Spring Fling fics are up - if you haven't, check them out! All the writers will be revealed later this month, but you can enjoy all the fics now. archiveofourown.org/collections/...
"Summergen is an anonymous, prompt-based, gen fanworks gift exchange originally designed to help Supernatural fans while away the desert months of summer hiatus. Since the show has ended, we just can't quit it. SPN is the Hotel California of fandoms. :D"
I've seen folks saying he should lie about it and say he did for the sake of queer rights, and FFS NO! The only way we get quality queer content is if we don't settle for anything less. SPN was fun, and it had some queer characters, Cas among them. But that's it.
Dying on the altar of SPN as queer is a stupid death, and a stupid legacy. The shows out there that were queer from day one are SO much better. OFMD, Black Sails, Love Victor, Heated Rivalry - shows like those are the real queer legacy of today. SPN shouldn't even be a footnote in comparison.
And FFS, please stop using body language as an argument that JA played Dean as gay. JA uses the same long glances and body language with Sam as well as Cas, so if that's gay then he was also playing Dean as intentionally incestuous, and we all know that's also not true.
Did some of the writers, the last showrunner, and one of the cast (MC) inject queer content into the show? Yes. Was it successful or skillfully done? No. JA has said for 15 years that Dean was written as straight, and he has never flipped or been wishy-washy about that. And that's okay.
JFC, the copium around Purcon 10 is killing me. Supernatural is and always has been a show about two brothers and their friends hunting monsters, devils, angels and eventually god. It is NOT a "censored queer text" and trying to make that its legacy is just... dumb.
