Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland Studying, appreciating, recording & conserving our wild plants Supporting the botanists who care about our wild plants https://bsbi.org/ #PlantAtlas2020 #100Plants2026 #WildFlowerHour DMs are not checked
BSBI Botany
Opportunities to sharpen your #WildflowerID skills with top botanical trainer @ambroisebaker.bsky.social! Only 1 space left on the Poaceae (grasses) Walk he is leading for us. Snap it up quickly, you won't regret it!
In North Aberdeenshire, purple saxifrage is only known from 2 coastal sites near Aberdour. Drostan Leack has a strong population with several recent records and about 100 plants counted today. Not so at Dundarg Castle, last record by Grant Roger in 1956 and all I could find today is in these photos.
Are you looking to get started with sedge ID? 3 things to help you: List of all British & Irish sedges with links to more info: bsbi.org/taxa/2cd4p9h... #BSBIPlantCrib for the trickiest sedges: bsbi.org/learn/resour... A fab in-person ID course this Wednesday: www.tickettailor.com/events/botan...
A teenie, tiny example of Purple Milk-vetch (Astragalus danicus) from yesterday's outing. Not the most impressive example, but still lovely. #wildflowers
Eyebright in calcareous grassland, Leicestershire, this week. #wildflowerhour
Good to see Wild Liquorice (Astragalus glycyphyllos) and Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) are still present locally here in North Lincs. The patterns on Henbane flowers are probably one of my favorites 🌼 @lincswildlife.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social @bnascience.bsky.social @plantlifeuk.bsky.social

Even a trip to the local recycling centre can turn botanical. Monkeyflower (Mimulus guttatus) getting a foothold beside a repurposed shipping container in Mochdre (and yes, I’ve grown up calling it Mimulus & refuse to call it by the awful new name Erythranthe 😂) #wildflowerhour
May Lily Maianthemum bifolium at one of its Norfolk locations. UK plants are considered to be satellites of Scandi pops as it rarely reproduces here if ever, just regularly introduced here by migratory birds #wildflowerhour
Excellent visit yesterday to Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust Badgeworth reserve to see the rare Adder’s-tongue Spearwort, Ranunculus ophioglossifolius. A superb showing this year along with other interesting plants of which more later, in company with @jeremyjem.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social

#30DaysWild 8 Another damp morning after a very wet night. A good day to stay on drier tarmac and spot some local #PavementPlants. Common Poppy, Black Medick, Bird's-foot Trefoil. Also Smooth Hawk's-beard (Crepis capillaris) - I think... better yellow composites ID welcome! @bsbibotany.bsky.social

You know your sedgery is getting out of control when Carex depauperata self sets everywhere and starts becoming a garden weed! #wildflowerhour not sure it counts as #LawnFlowers though?
