Unlike most previous Ebola disease outbreaks in Democratic Republic of Congo, the current outbreak is due to the Bundibugyo virus. There are currently no approved vaccines or treatments available for Bundibugyo.
As of May 28, there have been 125 patients with confirmed cases, 906 suspected cases, and 223 suspected deaths officially reported across Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces. However, the true scale of the outbreak remains impossible to measure.
Diagnosing this virus is another major challenge as there is a shortage of Bundibugyo virus–specific test kits.
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are working to contain the spread of the disease and strengthen patient care, alongside the Congolese Ministry of Health.
Extremely limited testing capacity and difficulties accessing certain areas mean that data must be interpreted with caution. www.doctorswithoutborders.org/latest/ebola...
