"We shouldn't rip up the rules halfway through – taking retrospective action on people who are taxpayers, who are making a contribution, who are part of our society looking after our most vulnerable...It's unfair, it's un-British to do so."

This is what happens when entire communities are blamed for the actions of individuals, and when our political culture normalises suspicion, exclusion, and dehumanisation of people of colour. Violence does not begin with petrol bombs; it begins with narratives that strip people of their humanity.
Figures like Tommy Robinson and Elon Musk are exploiting tragedy to inflame tensions and advance their own agendas, pouring fuel on an already dangerous fire. They do not care about the welfare of the people of Belfast.
What we witnessed was a violent, racist riot: families forced to flee, homes and businesses set alight, people targeted as a form of collective punishment.
Migrants and people of colour across the four nations will be living in fear today.
The scenes from Belfast last night are horrifying. Our thoughts remain with the victim of the knife attack, and with all those who have since been subjected to violence, intimidation, and fear.
