Our new genome-scale study reveals that millipedes originated at least 459 million years ago and may have already been roaming land during the Ordovician. We also resolve the placement of two mysterious millipede lineages that puzzled scientists for over a century. 🧬
The study shows that complex chemical defenses, such as the highly toxic alkaloids, and even rolling into an armadillo-like ball evolved multiple times independently.
From fossil evidence, millipedes were the first animals adapted to life on land about 425 million years ago. In this new paper, we reconstructed their ancient evolutionary history across nearly half a billion years. 🌎
