“Billions of dollars now are being lost to those local economies... They are targeting species that are the bedrock, not just of livelihoods and jobs, but of food security." Hear from Steve Trent, EJF CEO and Founder, in his interview with the BBC on illegal fishing in Sierra Leone:

🎨 🌱 Artists and environmentalists take to Corumbá’s streets The Paraguay-Paraná waterway threatens the natural water pulse of the Pantanal. Alongside artists, activists, and communities, we led a movement in defence of the Pantanal against this looming destruction.
Le maërl pousse de moins d'1mm/an. Met des siècles à se constituer. Détruit en quelques minutes par des engins de pêche traînants de fond. Protéger le maërl = protéger les pêcheries. 🌊
Maerl takes centuries to form, but can be destroyed in minutes by bottom-towed fishing gear. Today, we handed a sample of this "pink treasure" to Commissioner Kadis and Minister Chabaud, calling for real protection for Chausey's habitats under OSPAR, Natura 2000 and EU biodiversity commitments.
1️⃣ First, we listened. EJF's local team gathered with young leaders and activists in an open conversation circle to discuss what the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway stands for: the devastation of the Pantanal's main rivers and the total transformation of a biome that so many people call home.
3️⃣ Then, we acted. At the public hearing which ended the week, the community showed up as a collective voice against the waterway. In a country as culturally rich and diverse as Brazil, environmental protection is also about strengthening community, celebrating culture, and building hope.
2️⃣ Then, we felt. Corumbá is known as the heart of the Pantanal, and its artists carry the wetland in their work. We gathered on the banks of the Paraguay River for a festival that brought together traditional music, contemporary art, and urban cultural movements in tribute to a biome.
