Environmental DNA from lakes and rivers in Southeast China shows that sites with frequent tropical cyclones have more nonnative fish than less storm-prone sites, partly because flood waters and high winds facilitate species movement. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/bC5150YQEl8
Flathead catfish...a relatively recent addition to the Susquehanna River fish fauna.
My new paper with @gdarlim.bsky.social and @hoehna.bsky.social is now out in Proceedings B! We set out to compare two different approaches to time-calibrate a molecular phylogeny: traditional node calibrations, and unresolved FBD... @royalsocietypublishing.org

Using ultraconserved elements (UCEs) we were able to include data from several formalin-fixed specimens, including the rare troglobitic Uegitglanis from Somalia.
Pleased to share a new phylogeny for the airbreathing or walking catfishes from the family Clariidae - part of my postdoctoral work at the AMNH in collaboration with Tobit Liyandja and Melanie Stiassny: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

🐟 A new species of the flathead genus Elates has been described from specimens purchased at a fish market in the southern Philippines.
🧬 Its distinct identity is supported by anatomical features, such as a large eye and dark peritoneum.

‼️NEW ANGLERFISH PAPER! 🐟🎣
So excited to share the final part of my Master’s research! We explore the bizarre tacklebox of anglerfish lures and show how these fishes evolved different ways to attract prey and maybe even mates in the deep sea. 🧪🦑🌊🦇🦀

Abstract. Time-calibrating a phylogenetic tree is a fundamental step in phylogenetic inference, as it allows the study of macroevolutionary processes such
There are more individuals of the deep-sea fish Cyclothone than any other vertebrate genus, maybe as many as one million billion. Distinctively ornamented ichthyoliths place the origin of Cyclothone in the greenhouse world of the early Eocene, ~55.6 Ma. royalsocietypublishing.org/rspb/article...

A Yale-led study describing a new Southern cavefish species provides strong evidence that new species can arise in organisms adapted to live only underground.
