What is the evolutionary origin of the organizer? New work from @kremnyovs.bsky.social, @tclebedeva.bsky.social & Hejnol Lab @uni-jena.de reports the blastopore lip of the #ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi, a member of the evolutionary sister group to all other metazoans, exhibits organizer activity.
"Wound healing responses (which involve the reaggregation of cells and maturation into a tissue) in diverse animals (e.g. #sponges, #cnidarians, and #ctenophores) share transcriptional similarities with M. vibrans aggregation." Very cool findings (and #scicomm!) from Gerdt & Ruiz-Trillo Groups 😎
Happy #CtenophoreCtuesday! For your moment of zen, enjoy this calming video of a Leucothea pulchra swimming through the water 🔊🪼🌊 This comb jelly has rows of beating cilia (ctenes) that refract light, giving the appearance of 🌈-colored pulses. #ctenophore #PrideMonth 🏳️‍🌈 🦑 📽️ @montereybayaquarium.org

We have a sea gooseberry bloom here in Norfolk at the moment! Thousands of gooseberry-sized comb jellies (ctenophore) are currently washed up on our beaches, glistening in the sun. And yes, they’re plankton! #marineplankton 🦑

1/10 For decades, cellular aggregation was considered an evolutionary dead end. Cells could come together temporarily. But complex multicellular organisms like animals? Our study, led by JP Gerdt, with Ruibao & @jennahed.bsky.social suggests it may be time to rethink that🧵 #ProtistsOnSKy
