François Primeau, a UC Irvine professor, developed mathematical and computational ocean models that helped us understand the ocean's role in global climate. He was killed on his bike by someone driving a car. 🌊

Don't get me started on electricity.
At the World Economic Forum’s #AMNC26, global leaders are gathering in China – which has been fast electrifying its economy 🇨🇳 In 2023, China’s share of electricity in final energy consumption reached 32%, far surpassing the US and OECD Europe (24%)⚡ ember-energy.org/lat...

The gauntlet is thrown down! Is New York City’s #SummerStreets the best event of its kind in the world? If not, what’s/where’s better, and why? Make your case!
Folks ask me why I don't drive. It's because it's incredibly expensive in Alberta. Fees, taxes and insurance: it's not just the exorbitant costs of a monthly car note, but this province that makes it more expensive. #ableg Thank you @robsonfletcher.com for one more data point. :(
All of this was predicted (or at least anticipated), but those profiting from the status quo spent decades denying the science, delaying clean energy and postponing preparations. The overwhelming majority of the decisions that put us in this crisis were made by people employed to plan the future.
None of this is an accident. This didn't just happen. It took serious lobbying planning, funding and ongoing management to create the disaster in which we now find ourselves. alexsteffen.substack.com/p/we-now-liv...

Bordeaux’s high Monday of 41.8C (107F) falls on the extreme right tail, 3.6 Sigma with a return interval of 1-in-7000 years for June in a historical climate. But heat like this is much more likely now due to #climatechange. #heatwave #france

What kind of future is being planned for the place you call home?

We now live in a world of planned disasters.
I honestly think Summer Streets are the best events in NYC, and possibly the world. 10 miles of car free walking, riding, and jogging through all of Manhattan, completely free. Just unbeatable.
