NEW: A former captain flying for Air Canada allegedly flew hundreds of flights without the proper license, officials said on Monday.
before reportedly landing on a roadway in the Ogwashi-Uku area near Asaba. The regulator said preliminary findings showed that the aircraft later departed the location and flew back to Lagos without obtaining the required regulatory clearance.
Upon arrival in Lagos, the aircraft was immediately grounded pending the outcome of the investigation, while the flight crew were placed under regulatory review. The NCAA also announced the suspension of the operator's Permit for Non-Commercial Flight pending further inquiries.

The pilot who had been promoted to captain, lacked the mandatory airline transport pilot licence (ATPL) for the position. Immediately upon Air Canada’s discovery of this, the individual was removed from active duty, and the company voluntarily reported the matter to Transport Canada.
Canada's Peel Regional Police said a fraud investigation led investigators to the pilot. The probe started after a random certification check turned up inconsistencies, officials said.
WATCH: Pope Leo sat with the pilots during his flight from Madrid to Barcelona on the second leg of his Spain tour. The pontiff was invited aboard by one of the captains, and waved at Spanish Air Force fighter jet pilots escorting the plane.

Air Canada said in a statement, "Safety was not compromised by this incident because all pilots at Air Canada undergo mandatory recurrent training every six months to validate their flying competency, including a flight check with a certified Transport Canada check-pilot every 12 months.

However, appropriate licensing is an essential layer of the airline industry’s multi-layered approach to safety, so Air Canada has undertaken an audit of its pilot group and found no other instances of non-compliance."
