forced to wear all my trash outfits pre-vacation so i can serve across state lines next week
alright. time for the business. i am convinced most of the “Goldeneye aged poorly” discourse is due to how bad it feels on a modern stick. things are rough here. “Control” is my go to test mission and i missed a LOT of headshots. very sensitive to small movements. i managed, but not ideal.

construction feels great. it’s a gamecube stick and feels solid. i was replacing my childhood stick had lost ~50% of its range, so anything would be an improvement. folks suggested repairing the original stick, but i am fairly certain the parts are just too worn down. i’ll still hang onto them.

OK!! sorry for the delay (busy day), but here are my results. for those who just want the numbers, here you go. everything on the new 8bitdo TMR N64 stick looks near perfect to a brand new, OEM N64 stick on paper, but the numbers do not tell the whole story.

next test was Smash Bros. this one has ALWAYS irritated me. an aftermarket controller i once had made any movement but dashing flat out impossible. everything here worked well, but tilt attacks were a hair touchy. dashes come out fast, but all stages of walk -> run are manageable.
Verdict: this is a solid stick, likely the best under $100… but it still has issues. the extra sensitivity (far better than other 3rd party sticks tbf) means you’ll need more careful inputs. 8BitDo REALLY needs to add sensitivity and dead zone settings to the software, but overall it works. 7.5/10
a few more tests: -Mario 64: walking in a circle in place is possible, but challenging. -F-Zero X: turning feels sharp. felt like I was often only utilizing ~60% of the stick’s range or else I’d overturn. i’m also bad at this game. -Pokemon Snap & Zelda: solid to great.
alright, time to see how these 8bitdo N64 stick replacements hold up i heard they had issues at launch, but after a software update (the idea of updating the firmware of your n64 stick lmao) they’re supposedly very good

i’m sure some artists worked very hard on this, but i never liked how gta’s character designs lost their stylization looking back i think it’s one of the big reasons i fell out of love with the series after chinatown wars, tho this was an issue with san andreas as well

first game i tested was Star Fox 64. this one has dogged me ever since i first tried the Wii VC version with a classic controller and found it nearly unplayable. first impressions were great. made it through the first 3 missions without any damage, had a great time. just a hair twitchy.
