🌊 For the Oceans 🌊 Working to protect the ocean through efforts to #BanBottomTrawling #EndOverfishing #FightIllegalFishing 🔗https://europe.oceana.org/

This week scientists and Mediterranean countries of @fao.org GFCM will discuss the deep sea. The scientific arguments to extend the trawl ban to below 800m are clear. Now what remains is the will to take action - for the future of the sea, and the fisheries that depend on it.

🌊 What does the ocean look like through children's eyes? 🐙🪼 We're inviting kids to draw their favourite marine animal. The best drawings will be featured on our channels and in a special digital gallery. 👉 Submit your child's drawing today: europe.oceana.org/gallery-the-...
A fishing vessel's flag shows where it's registered. Not who owns it. Not who profits from its activities. This map that we’re presenting at #OOC11 reveals the scale of foreign-owned fishing vessels across Africa & the accountability gap that comes with it.

Our oceans are under threat — and marine life is counting on us. 🌊 This Ocean Action Month, take a stand for wildlife and the ecosystems they rely on. Support @oceana.bsky.social and be part of the movement to protect and restore our oceans — for all who depend on them.
The promise of “simpler rules” is politically attractive. The consequences may be far less so. Reopening the #CommonFisheriesPolicy could unravel years of progress towards sustainable fisheries, creating new risks. Thanks, @drrashidsumaila.bsky.social, for helping bring clarity.

West Africa's oceans provide food & livelihoods for over 100 million people. Yet illegal fishing & opaque ownership keep threatening coastal communities. Ahead of #OOC11, Sonia Kwami makes the case for why fisheries transparency is key to changing that.👇 www.thecable.ng/west-africa-...

Extending the deep-sea trawl ban to below 800m is science-backed & would have minimum socio-economic impacts. Morocco🇲🇦 has the chance to champion this at the @fao.org GFCM, reinforcing its role as a leader in sustainable fisheries governance in the region. 👉 albayane.press.ma/sommes-nous-...

The #OOC11 starts today in Mombasa 🇰🇪 Listen to @verampcoelho.bsky.social lay out our calls to action this week: transparency on who owns the vessels fishing around the globe, effective protection of 30% of the ocean by 2030, and putting small-scale fishers at the heart of fisheries decisions.
At Oceana’s breakfast briefing during the Our Ocean Conference, we explored how uncovering beneficial ownership of fishing vessels can help combat illegal fishing in Africa, a crucial step toward a healthier ocean and stronger governance. 👏Many thanks to everyone who participated! #OOC11

At #OOC11 in Mombasa, Oceana presented a new analysis exposing the hidden ownership structures behind illegal fishing. Governments must make real ownership of all fishing vessels public. 🌊 ➡️ europe.oceana.org/reports/hidd...
