seriously though Hockney's landscapes of Yorkshire were the main thing that got me into landscape painting whenever that was, and also just an insightful historian and philosopher of painting, if you want to know about western art history don't ask an Oxford professor watch Hockney's documentaries

In about 2002 all the boys in my class got these daft gelled up quiffs and I was like I dunno lads I think I have to grow my hair long I can’t explain why
And that’s why it takes me 30 hours to finish a tiny little painting, I can speed up and rush them but the work suffers and ends up looking more generic and formulaic, colours less interesting, brushwork less interesting, less texture and interplay between the layers of paint
had the pleasure of meeting David Hockney at a charity do once, surprisingly down to earth and VERY funny (not actually please)
also I thought it was impact in the statement, but these are paintings by Hockney, of Yorkshire, yeah sure everyone loves Van Gogh, didn't paint Yorkshire though did he

I say western art history just because that's what people actually mean when they just say art history, but he had also studied art from other countries and cultures and they informed his insights into seeing and optics in interesting ways
