always said there's no profit motive for art made for art's sake, because that's art made to exclude you. Art isn't made for you. It's made to be engaged with. That often means art challenges you. You're being given an experience, one you can opt out of, but opting in or out are the only choices.
I guess this is why I roll my eyes so aggressively when people talk about characters being likable or the dangers of putting off the audience. Like. Yeah. That's the point. Being willing to alienate. Art that cares if you like it is often very bad art or a product to win your money.
