Huge thanks to all co-authors and collaborators who made this possible! 🙌
We hope this protocol will be useful for researchers studying gonad development, reproductive biology, sex differentiation, embryonic organ culture, and developmental perturbations.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is now PMOS: Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome. A much-needed change that better reflects the endocrine, metabolic, and reproductive features of the condition. Hopefully this improves awareness, diagnosis, and care ➡️ www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...
🧵1/6 Excited to share that our new STAR Protocols paper is out! 🧬✨
We describe an improved protocol for culturing mouse fetal gonads ex vivo using 3D-printable molds. 🐭🧫

This is the approach we used in our Cell Reports paper to ask metabolic questions in the fetal testis, including how glycogen and lactate metabolism support the male germ line. ⚡🧬

🧵5/6
Although this protocol was tested in mice, we would love to see whether similar 3D-printed culture platforms can be adapted to other species. 🐸🐣🦎
Comparative gonad culture could open exciting ways to study conserved and species-specific mechanisms of sex differentiation.
🧵2/6
A key feature of this protocol is accessibility: the molds are 3D printable, and the files can be downloaded directly from the paper 🖨️🧫 We hope this makes fetal gonad culture easier to reproduce and adapt across labs.

Fetal gonads are tiny, delicate, and develop fast. 🔬⏱️
A reliable culture system is essential not only to maintain gonads ex vivo, but also to perturb their development with chemicals, inhibitors, metabolites, or other treatments and ask how testis and ovary development change 🧪
We have launched a call for the renewal of the Society’s logo, and we invite developmental biologists working in Latin America, as well as Latin American developmental biologists working abroad, to participate in this contest.
