Grantmaking made based on political considerations leads to higher costs, worse services & less-effective investments – missed cures/breakthroughs, families poorly served, and infrastructure that goes unbuilt.
The proposal would undermine the quality of public services/investments by allowing grants for everything from scientific research to public health to clean energy to be awarded, frozen, or terminated based on criteria, including politically motivated criteria, unrelated to merit.
Federal grantmaking processes are meant to be fair and free of political favoritism or retaliation – but a new Trump Admin rule would allow corruption & politicization of grant award decisions, creating an outsized risk of abuse & coercion.
Congratulations to Chris Hastedt & Mary Henderson on receiving the 2026 Muskie Access-to-Justice award for their decades of work on economic & health security in Maine. Co-founding @maineequaljustice.bsky.social & their incredible advocacy has transformed the lives of countless families.
Mary & Chris were among my first teachers for how state-level advocates impact policies that matter to people & communities. I’m grateful for the decades-long partnership between CBPP and MEJ, on both state and national policies. www.muskiefund.org/honoree/chri...
