April 16th is our Emancipation Day in DC. It's seriously taken as a citywide celebration. Yes, contrary to myths about DC not being the south, it was slave territory where many were enslaved, & Lincoln only freed them during the Civil War to save face.

many in Tennessee, Kentucky, and other southern states still celebrate August 8th as Emancipation Day... June 19th is the official amalgam, but im not opposed to both "The Co-worker Potluck" AND "The Black Family Reunion" (some holidays we just hafta keep to ourselves)
