-Don't be fooled by their common name! Ladybugs are beetles (Order: Coleoptera) & not true bugs (Order: Hemiptera).
-Mouthparts can be a helpful ID tool.
True bugs possess a straw-like "stylet" to feed, where beetles have mandibles for chewing food like this unfortunate aphid.

Finally, I want to acknowledge these folks in particular, who offered ample guidance and support at every step of the painting process.
Go check out the exhibit!
Earlier this year, I was asked to paint seven life-size plant sculptures for the Botany of Nations exhibit.
The exhibit brought together an incredible group of artists, scientists & Indigenous historians to share rich botanical knowledge known long before Western colonizers claimed "discovery".
Collaborating on Botany of Nations has been so rewarding and humbling. I hope you have a chance to see this immersive multi-sensory exhibit it in person. 💚
They cannot terrorize us into submission.
We will protect our vibrant communities.
We will fight back.
Abolish ICE!

It was a delight to paint this delicate botanical piece as a gift for a client’s grad school supervisor.
