Women's mental health has historically been understudied, particularly regarding the interaction between hormonal fluctuations and brain function. We hope this framework supports more precise approaches to understanding and treating psychiatric symptoms across the menstrual cycle.
Whether through personal experience 💭, research 👩🔬, or clinical practice 🩺, you may have encountered taboos around hormones and brain 🧠 (mental and neurological) health from menstrual cycles and pregnancy 🤰 to menopause, hormonal contraception 💊, and gender-affirming care.
✨ By responding to just 2 anonymous questions on your experience with taboos, you can help shed light on the (sometimes obvious, sometimes more hidden) taboos that impede equal, representative, and stigma-free research and healthcare. ✨
Excited to share “Timing Matters: Leveraging Positron Emission Tomography Imaging and Hormonal Cycles for Precision Psychiatry in Female Mental Health” is published in Biological Psychiatry! 🎉

In the paper, we propose a framework for investigating menstrual cycle–linked symptom patterns and underlying neurobiology using PET imaging of key neurotransmitter systems, including serotonin, GABA, dopamine, and norepinephrine.
We discuss how integrating hormonal dynamics into PET research may help advance precision psychiatry approaches for women, highlighting:
• Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) as a cycle-specific condition
• Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as a cycle-responsive condition
