Absolutely *amazing* microCT scan of a little croc skull chunk from the "Mesaverde" Formation of Park Co., Wyoming. (short thread) 🧪🐊🦴
The University of Michigan, and the EEB Department was a great place to work. But the UMMZ is and will remain a special place for me. The people that work in the collections and labs of the UMMZ (& UMMP, UMMAA, and Herbarium) are some of the most dedicated "museum people" you'll ever meet.
I am hoping to continue my career in Natural History Museums, morphology, anatomy, and µCT. So, if any of you know of an upcoming role in Canada, or are looking to collaborate on projects please reach out.
From a young age, I always wanted to work in a natural history museum. The University of Michigan Museum of Zoology was absolutely a dream come true. Over the years I've had the wonderful opportunity to work with researchers and students from all over the U.S, Canada, and elsewhere.
I am also not an American, I am Canadian, and this recent stretch has allowed us to re-evaluate our values, our goals, and the environment in which we want our child to grow up. And, we believe that Canada offers that at this time in history. I will miss the US, Michigan, and our many friends here.
I'm proud of my contributions to the oVert project, Morphosource. If you ever interacted with me by email, in person at a conference, or needed data over these years I hope I was able to help you accomplish your goals. My aim has always been to open, accessible, and engaged in the community.
My decision to leave has nothing to do with a new role, but a re-prioritization of our life. 2025 was a dramatically difficult year for my family and I. In late 2024, our daughter died during birth. In 2025 my wife lost her NIH funded position. And in late 2025, we welcomed our son.
I do my research for close to $0. Morphosource.org - free CT scans Meshlab - 3D object measurement Slicer - CT scan processing(segmentation) Morphology J- geometric morphometric analysis Zotero-citations Blender-3d object manipulation/coloring
New paper! How weird could Permian animals get? Turns out, pretty weird. Meet the stem tetrapod Tanyka amnicola from the Pedra de Fogo Formation of northeast Brazil royalsocietypublishing.org/rspb/article...

After 7.5 years, I'm leaving my role as the UMMZ µ-CT lab manager at the end of July. This has been the most productive, and fulfilling period in my scientific career so far. I'm proud to say I've trained over 20 students, contributed to several publications, and generated over 12,000 µCT datasets.
